Many school districts and federal/state departments of education have budgets the same size as those of Fortune 500 companies. Charter Management Organizations (CMOs), on the other hand, are similar to smaller entrepreneurial organizations focused on growth. One thing they all have in common is that their organizational decisions have a tremendous impact on the lives of the students they serve.  Therefore, they all have a significant need for strong managers and leaders who understand the complexities of a successful organization and can bring their experiences, innovation and best practices to education systems.

The Broad Residency is a leadership development program that places participants into full-time high-level managerial positions in school districts, CMOs, and federal/state departments of education. While working, Broad Residents receive two years of professional development and access to a nationwide network of education leaders. Residents are often tasked with leading major projects like opening new schools, leading budgeting processes, increasing operational efficiencies, improving human resources, or supporting the launch of major policy initiatives. In these roles they can have an immediate impact on the education of America’s students.

The Broad Residency expects the organizations to continue to employ Broad Residency alumni in their current positions or promote them into more senior leadership posts. Over ninety percent of Broad Residency alumni still work in education and continue to positively impact student achievement as leaders in the education industry. 

Now in its tenth year, The Broad Residency has placed more than 250 Residents in more than 50 urban school districts, CMOs, and federal/state departments of education nationwide.
