Placement Process

Residents work for the superintendent or a senior executive in a reform-oriented urban school district or charter management organization (CMO). We often place Residents in districts where superintendents are graduates of The Broad Superintendents Academy.

School District/CMO Selection

School districts and charter management organizations (CMOs) apply to hire Broad Residents. Participating organizations are assessed based on the following criteria:

  • Engaged in significant reform efforts: The school district or CMO must be aggressively pursuing reforms to improve student performance.
  • Meaningful role for Resident: The organization’s senior leadership must assure The Broad Residency that the Resident will be placed in a role structured to accelerate the development and ability of the Resident to make a significant contribution to the organization. At the conclusion of the two-year program, The Broad Residency expects that school districts will hire Residents permanently in their current positions or promote them into more senior leadership posts.
  • Senior sponsor: Residents must report to the superintendent/CEO or a senior executive in a reform-oriented urban school district or charter management organization. The Broad Residency often places Residents in districts where superintendents are graduates of The Broad Superintendents Academy.
  • Funding: Residents earn annual salaries of $85,000 to $95,000 in their first year. School districts and CMOs set specific salaries based on their organization’s pay scales. The Broad Residency subsidizes 50 percent of Resident salaries, and districts and CMOs pay the balance and provide benefits comparable to a full-time employee in a similar position.
  • Scale: Both school districts and CMOs need to meet scale requirements. Districts must serve more than 20,000 students, and CMOs must have at least three schools with plans for further expansion.
  • Student demographics: The Broad Residency is focused on working in districts with students who have been historically underserved. The student population of participating districts and CMOs must be a minimum of 40 percent high-poverty and 40 percent non-white students.

Matching Candidates with Participating School Districts/CMOs

The Broad Residency works to closely match school district needs with Resident preferences. Candidates are asked to indicate their geographic preferences on the application. When candidates advance to the in-person interview day, The Broad Residency provides specific position-related information from the districts and CMOs that have been selected that year. Based on this more detailed information, candidates indicate their specific organization(s) preferences on the in-person interview day. The Broad Residency then works with each candidate to determine which organization(s) he/she will travel to for a final interview.
