Partner Organization Selection Process
The Broad Center invites select school districts and charter management organizations nationwide to partner with The Broad Residency program and become hosts for new Residents. Partner organizations hire Broad Residents to capitalize on the added management capacity and skills that a Resident brings to the organization to help it achieve its goals.
The Broad Center prioritizes Partnerships each year based upon mission related priorities and assesses opportunities with organizations based on the following criteria:
• Executive leadership and governance structure.
• Fiscal and governance stability.
• Aggressive pursuit of reforms to improve student performance.
• Overall capacity and performance of the organization.
• Role proposed for the Resident.
• For CMOs - we consider student achievement data and effectiveness of the education model.
General Partnership Elegibility
- To be a Partner organization, districts must be serving at least 37,500 students in which at least 40% of students are eligible for free or reduced-price school lunch (FRSL), in which at least 40% of their student enrollment comes from minority groups, and that are located in an urban area (based on NCES Common Core of Data http://nces.ed.gov/ccd/).
- The Broad Center considers placement of Residents in districts as small as 19,500 students whose superintendent/CEO is a graduate of The Broad Superintendents Academy. TBC does not automatically prioritize these locations over others.
- CMOs must be serving populations where 40% of their enrolled students are eligible for free or reduced-price school lunch, and which at least 40% of their students come from minority groups. They must also be located in an urban area; have at least three schools in operation in 2009-2010 and have viable and foreseeable plans for further expansion.
Matching Candidates with Participating School Districts/CMOs
The Broad Residency works to closely match organizations' needs with Resident preferences. The following steps occur during the selection process:
- Candidates are asked to indicate their geographic preferences on the application. We have learned that candidates' final placement decision are often geography-related (family, home ownership, familiarity, etc). Therefore, we ask candidates to begin thinking about geography as soon as possible.
- In January, The Broad Residency has access to and provides specific position-related information from the organizations that have been selected that year. At this stage, candidates have advanced from the 1st Round Interviews and will review this material before the 2nd Round Interviews.
- Prior to the 2nd Round Interviews, The Broad Residency conducts webinars to give candidates additional insight on placements and the matching process.
- Based on this more detailed information, candidates indicate their specific organization preferences and present these preferences during the 2nd Round Interviews.
- The Broad Residency then works with each candidate to determine which organization(s) he/she will travel to for a final interview.
- Sample job descriptions from previous years can be found here.
Placement Sites for 2010-2012 Class
Below is information about potential Broad Residency placements. Several locations have a “Signing Bonus” in addition to salary and moving cost reimbursement*. Locations have Signing Bonuses because they are great opportunities for impact, but historically may not have filled based on candidate interest in the geographic location.
A Signing Bonus not being offered for a location is not a signal of our lack of interest. All our partner organizations provide strong opportunities for impact and receive our full attention and support. Signing Bonuses may be added to additional cities as needed. Check back for updates.
We often partner with locations in which members of the senior leadership are graduates of The Broad Superintendents Academy and/or where Residents are already currently making an impact. This information has been provided below each location.
*All Residents accepted into the program are eligible to receive up to $3,000 in reimbursement for moving costs.
The table provides a regional overview of the potential opportunities. Beneath the table is a list with additional details including "Signing Bonuses" where applicable and links to other Broad Center affiliates at organizations in the area.
