How do you select organizations for placement?
Any large urban school district is eligible to host a Resident. This includes all districts with at least 20,000 students that meet additional criteria based on their student demographics and urban environment. Each year, districts from around the country submit applications to host Residents. The Broad Center evaluates the applications to determine if the district will be a successful placement for a Resident. In general, The Broad Center partners with large urban school districts that have a strong superintendent with a clearly defined strategy for improving student achievement, a senior level administrator willing to supervise each Resident, and an appropriate role for each Resident.
The Broad Center also targets growing urban charter and education management organizations with at least 3 schools, a strong academic track record serving high populations of low income students, and tight management and academic designs. In addition, we give preference to organizations with stellar management teams, strong investor confidence, and those led by executive leaders committed to being effective Resident supervisors.

How do you match Residents with organizations for placement?
Candidates advancing to interviews will be informed of districts participating in the program and asked to rank their preferences. At the in-person interview day, you will have the opportunity to talk with a member of The Broad Center staff about your geographic preferences and limitations. We will do our best to match you with your top district preference. If we cannot match you with one of your desired districts, you will have the opportunity to withdraw from the selection process.

How do I know if I’m a good candidate for the Residency?
Please review the Selection Criteria and The Residents pages on our website for the selection criteria and to compare the background of the current Residents to your own. We are primarily seeking individuals with an MBA, MPP, or JD with at least four years of experience exhibiting a track record of leadership and/or management.

I’ve noticed that many of the current Residents have several years of professional experience beyond their graduate school work. Is this a requirement?
This is not a requirement. However, we are looking for candidates with at least four years of full-time professional experience in addition to their graduate school work. Our current Broad Residents have an average of seven and half years work experience, with a range of four to 21 years of work experience.

I noticed many of your current Residents are from “top ten” schools. I am not from a “top ten” school. Do I really have a chance of getting in?
Yes. Our recruiting team is small and can only visit a certain number of schools. In general, they visit the “top twenty” campuses which results in a higher awareness of our program on those campuses as well as a higher number of applications from those campuses. We do not, however, turn away any candidates because of a school ranking. Strong work experience is equally as important.

I am currently a teacher/principal in an urban school. Would I be a strong candidate?
The Residency is designed to bring best practice management skills to urban districts from the private, government and non-profit sectors. In order to meet this goal, we are focused on candidates with an MBA, JD, or MPP and at least four years of professional management experience. If you have additional experience as a principal or teacher, we highly encourage you to apply.

I currently work in a managerial position in a school district. Would I be a strong candidate?
If you started work in an urban school district within the past year and have an MBA, JD, or MPP and at least four years of professional management experience, you can apply to be an Associate Resident. Associate Residents maintain their current positions, however, they are Broad Residents in every other aspect (e.g. access to Broad Center Staff and network, professional development sessions, 360 feedback, etc.)

I cannot relocate from my current city of residence. Is this a problem?
It may not be a problem if you live in a large urban area and your local school district is participating in the Broad Residency program. However, not being able to relocate may significantly limit your Residency options and, depending on your city of origin, may prevent you from being accepted into the Residency.

What type of position can I expect to take within a school district?
Residents assume managerial positions in central operations of urban school districts, and report directly to the Superintendent or a cabinet-level executive. Residents do not work at individual schools. Current Residents are using their prior knowledge and skills to support organizational change primarily in the following areas: operations, finance, human resources, information technology, strategy, and marketing. Residents are employees of the school districts, not of The Broad Center.
What type of position can I expect to take within a charter management organization?
Resident positions must impact their full organization, as opposed serving a specific school. Typical charter residency positions include Chief Operating Officer or other executive cabinet or director level positions in Operations, Finance, Human Resources or New Business Development. Residents are employees of the charter management organizations, not of The Broad Center.

What is the time commitment required?
The Residency is a full-time job commitment for two years. In addition to a highly demanding job that is likely to require work over many evenings and weekends, Residents agree to participate in eight professional development sessions that will sometimes be held on weekends. In addition, participants are expected to commit a significant amount of time between sessions to complete pre-reading and perform assignments related to their professional development.

Is the salary negotiable?
Residents receive a base salary of $80,000 to $90,000 per year, plus benefits and reimbursement for up to $3,000 in relocation expenses. The exact salary is set by the district and will vary according to district pay schedules.

Do I need to be nominated to apply?
No, you do not need to be nominated to apply. The nomination option gives people who know strong candidates the ability to nominate individuals they think would be a good fit for the role. This process gives us an opportunity to contact these potential candidates and inform them about the Residency.

I applied last year but wasn’t accepted. Do I have to submit a new application?
Yes, you will need to submit a new application with updated contact information and resume. You may choose to submit the same responses to the essay questions, though we encourage you to focus your responses on the new experiences you have gained and new skills you have developed since the last time you applied.
