“When I think about the achievement gap, my emotions range from sadness to rage. In our great nation, how can we not ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive an education that will afford them a variety of choices in life? Fifty years after Brown vs. Board of Education, we still watch as children of color and children in low-income communities continue to perform significantly below many of their peers. Each of us has a fundamental responsibility to make certain that school districts across the United States can succeed at the highest levels. The Broad Residency affords me the opportunity to be a part of the change I wish to see—and to use my skills to pursue my wildest dream of educational equity.”

Cate Reed currently serves in the Office of High School Reform for Pittsburgh Public Schools, a district serving approximately 28,000 students in 65 schools. Prior to joining The Broad Residency, Reed served as the managing director of Teach For America’s New York summer training institute, where she was responsible for a staff of over 115, the training of over 550 new teachers, and a .2 million budget. In addition, Reed has worked on district strategy and teacher placement for Teach For America New York. Previously, she worked as a school administrator in a Pittsburgh charter school. Reed’s career began in education as a Teach For America corps member teaching third and fourth grade in Washington, D.C. Her passion for issues around the achievement gap began as a high school student in the Pittsburgh Public Schools.  Reed participated in The Broad Residency in Urban Education Cohort 2007, serving her two-year Residency in Pittsburgh Public Schools.
