Joyce Walker is currently pursuing a doctorate in education leadership through the Urban Education Leaders Program at Columbia University Teachers College. She most recently served as executive director for Citizen Schools, a non-profit organization providing extended learning opportunities for middle school students in Massachusetts. Walker previously served as special assistant to the Chief Academic Officer of Baltimore City Public Schools. During her Residency, Walker served in Durham Public Schools first as an administrative services analyst and then as a special assistant to the Superintendent for planning and performance management. Prior to joining the Residency, Walker spent nine years in sales and corporate training with Pfizer Inc. During her career with Pfizer, she implemented strategic business plan initiatives by developing alliances with healthcare providers, hospitals, as well as managed care organizations and earned numerous sales awards. She also spent almost five years in insurance as a property and casualty underwriter for The Chubb Group of Insurance Companies. Walker earned a bachelor’s degree in English from Tufts University and a master’s degree in business administration from The Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. Walker participated in The Broad Residency in Urban Education Cohort 2006, serving her two-year Residency in Durham Public Schools.
