Signing Bonuses
Several locations have a “Signing Bonus” in addition to salary and moving cost reimbursement*.  These are great opportunities for impact, but historically may not have filled based on candidate interest in the geographic location.  A Signing Bonus not being offered for a location is not a signal of our lack of interest. All our partner organizations provide strong opportunities for impact and receive our full attention and support.

*All Residents accepted into the program are eligible to receive up to $3,000 in reimbursement for moving costs.

Potential Placements

We are also considering placements in the following cities.  We have on-going relationships with organizations in many of these cities and will confirm upon further evaluation:

Albany, NY

Cost of Living
If you are considering moving for this opportunity, you should compare cost of living as part of your decision.  Use these calculators to learn about differences in cost of living.  Both links provide similar information.  Bankrate.com provides more detail.  Salary.com compares more cities.

Late Breaking Opportunities
Every year, several strong placements do not emerge until the end of the selection process.  For example, one year we placed in the Delaware Department of Education because they were a Race to the Top winner - but this was not known until April.  Candidates who are flexible in geographic placement and whose placement decision would be more influenced by a unique opportunity can indicate their openness to a "Late Breaking Opportunity" on the application.

> Learn more about Delaware's plan for Race to the Top funds and view the presentation that allowed them to win.
> We will be partnering with additional Race to the Top winners. Learn more about Race to the Top here.

Matching Candidates with Organizations

The Broad Residency works to closely match candidate preferences with organizations' culture and needs. The following steps occur during the selection process:

  1. Candidates are asked to indicate their initial geographic preferences when they submit their resumes and applications.  We have learned that candidates' final placement decisions are often geography-related (family, home ownership, familiarity, etc).  Therefore, we ask candidates to begin thinking about geography as soon as possible.  Candidates are able to adjust their preferences later as they learn more about the opportunities.
  2. In January, The Broad Residency has access to and provides specific position-related information* from the organizations that have been selected that year.  At this stage, candidates have advanced from the 1st Round Interviews and will review this information before the 2nd Round Interviews.
  3. Prior to the 2nd Round Interviews, The Broad Residency conducts webinars to give candidates additional insight on placements and the matching process.
  4. Based on this position-related information, candidates indicate their specific organization preferences during the 2nd Round Interviews.
  5. The Broad Residency then works with each candidate to determine which organization(s) he/she will travel to for a final interview.

Organization Types
The links below provide quick overviews of the organization types we place into.  These are generalizations, you should not make conclusive determinations about the type of role or organization you are a fit for until you have actually seen the job descriptions*.

>School Districts
>Charter Management Organizations
>Federal and State Departments of Education

*Current job descriptions are not yet available.  However, sample job descriptions from previous years can be found here.

Partner Organization Assessment

The Broad Center prioritizes partnerships each year based upon mission related priorities and assesses opportunities with organizations based on the following criteria:

• Executive leadership and governance structure.
• Fiscal and governance stability.
• Aggressive pursuit of reforms to improve student performance.
• Overall capacity and performance of the organization.
• Role proposed for the Resident.
• For CMOs - we consider student achievement data and effectiveness of the education model.
